Finding the Right Gardener

Could hiring a gardener be the right solution for you? If you do not have a natural green thumb or you’re too time poor to  maintain a healthy, beautiful garden, it might be that finding the right gardener could be your best option to achieve the perfect outdoor space.

Be careful though, as the best gardener is not always necessarily be a cheap gardener; and conversely using a cheap gardener can end up being very expensive if they are not insured or police checked.

How to Find the Right Gardener

  1. Visualise what you want to achieve in your garden – you might need a gardener who is experience enough to help provide input in garden design and landscaping, beyond just basic lawn mowing and pruning services.  How frequently you will need garden maintenance will depend on the kind of garden, plantings, lawn area and use.
  2. Check your gardeners qualifications and experience – Opt for a gardener who has many years of experience in performing gardening tasks. Ask to see some of their recent work; or see if you can call some of their clients as references.  And always make sure that your gardener is insured, no matter how experienced they claim to be.
  3. Ask for a written quote for gardening – Make sure that the estimated cost given to you includes all aspects of the gardening job to be done. For instance, ask if the price is per visit if you require a regular garden maintenance program. Often, however, garden maintenance services are provided on an hourly basis. The amount varies depending on the location and the services involved; and can vary seasonally. You might be given a flat rate if you choose to let the expert visit and maintain your garden monthly.
  4. Look into the services offered – Most garden maintenance companies can perform any job related to gardening – but some might refuse to remove green waste or charge extra for this service Some will happily go well beyond the garden care and offer reticulation and watering systems, landscaping and even gutter cleaning.

Different Services Offered By a Gardener

  • Lawn Care – Lawn mowing is only part of creating a beautiful lawn – you might also need lawn repair, rejuvenation and aeration services if you want to truly obtain that perfect, lush looking lawn.
  • Fertilisation  – Fertilisers will help keep the plants healthy. These substances also encourage the plants to produce high-quality flowers, veggies or fruits.
  • Garden Cleanup & Waste Removal – Garden cleanup services may include mowing, leaf collection, weeding, mulching, edging, watering, landscaping, fertilising and pruning. Waste removal, on the other hand, will deal with getting rid of all the rubbish from your garden and recycling them whenever possible.
  • Weed Control – Weeds can block sunlight and take nutrients from your plants. The best gardener will assist in weed removal as well as inform you how to successfully get rid of weeds from your garden.
  • Trimming and Pruning  – A reputable gardener can offer regular trimming and pruning services to keep your garden always looking at its best.
