What Mulch is Best For Your Garden?

Mulch is handy for keeping your garden happy and healthy. It keeps soil moist, reducing the amount of watering you’ll need to do to. Adding mulch to your garden can also stop weeds from coming through, helping your plants look their best.

There are many different types of mulch available, so it’s important to choose the right one for your garden.

In this video, John from Jim’s Mowing takes us through a few of the popular mulch varieties out there, and some reasons behind why you might like to mulch.

“So, we’ll talk a bit about the benefits of mulching,” he says.

“One is aesthetics to your garden – it makes it look nice and neat and clean. Two: water retention – for the heat, it holds the moisture in the ground and helps the plants. Three: a little bit of weed control – it doesn’t fully control the weeds ’cause the weeds will still germinate on top, but it will help weed control to a certain extent”.

He discusses five different types of mulch:

  • Half-inch brown pine
  • Terracotta
  • Ebony
  • Buffalo flat rock
  • Coral stones

Half-inch brown pine, terracotta, and ebony are all good for water retention, weed control, and aesthetics.

If you have a heavily-gummed area, or somewhere that experiences a lot of fallen leaves, you should choose a natural-looking product such as the half-inch brown pine. Steer clear of the ebony for this kind of setting. This is because ebony mulch shows up every leaf and imperfection.

Buffalo flat rocks and coral stones aren’t fantastic at water retention, but they’re very aesthetic. Buffalo flats look great when wet and are also good for those that like to use a leaf blower to get rid of leaf litter. Coral stones are well-suited to pathways and driveways, and have beautiful colours that show when wet.

“With mulch you’ve got to look at blending into the environment you want, and the type of finish you want,” John says.

The key is to choose a mulch that suits the space and helps you to achieve the look you’re after. If you want something incredibly crisp and clean, you may like a stone-look, whereas those after a natural aesthetic may instead prefer to go with a wood mulch.
