How to Repot Cacti and Succulents

Cacti and Succulents are hardy plants that need very little maintenance. Here’s a Step By Step guide on how to re-pot them – giving you a flexible, portable garden that can bring colour and texture to outdoor patios, or inside your home.  You might even pot them in some bright coloured pots for gifts to friends.

Remember, as your plant grows its will need to be transferred into a larger pot.  This can be done successfully at any time of the year but preferable after the growing season. You will need to repot every 1 to 3 years depending on the type of cacti or succulent.

Step 1

Place a few centimetres of cacti and succulent potting mix   in a pot that is one size larger than the original pot – cacti and succulents do not need a lot of area to survive. Cacti and succulent potting mix is specially formulated for good drainage and nutrients that are required for cacti and succulents to thrive.

Step 2

If removing a prickly cactus, you can use a old towel folded which will protect you from the prickles. Place towel on top of cactus gentle placing your hand on the towel turning it upside down, with other hand remove old pot carefully.

Step 3

If cacti or succulent have been in a pot for some time you may need to loosen the soil around the roots but be careful not to damage the roots.

Step 4

Place cacti or succulent in the new pot top up pot with potting mix press down to firm soil around the plant, if it is to difficult to get around the prickles gentle tap the bottom of pot on a hard surface.

Step 5

Wait a couple of days for soil to settle before watering. Only water plants once the soil is dry from the last watering,  as to much water may result in the roots rooting damaging the plant.

Step 6

Place cacti and succulents in an area that will allow it to get at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day in order to keep the plant healthy.
